Religious Education

At Bishop Lonsdale Church of England primary school we believe that RE forms an important part of children’s education, providing them with some understanding of the diverse community and world in which they live. We are a Church of England School and so Christianity forms two thirds of our RE curriculum. However, each year group also focuses on one or two additional faiths so that, on their journey through school, pupils will learn about Sikhism, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism. Respect is one of our ‘Bishop Rules’ and is also at the forefront of RE, with children exploring their own thoughts, questions and beliefs about religion while learning to respect the beliefs of others. We have adopted Understanding Christianity (from Derby Diocese) and Derbyshire’s Agreed RE Syllabus.

Religious Education makes valuable contributions to cross-curricular objectives and to collective worship. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from RE but should consider that they will then be missing out on a fun, varied and thought provoking area of the curriculum which often links to other areas of learning.

Please take a look at our RE topics for each year group.
