Help Your Child with Phonics

Say the sound correctly

It is important that the sounds are pronounced correctly, just as they would sound in speech. Try not to add ‘uh’ to consonant sounds, such as /t/ and /p/, as this makes it trickier to blend the sounds together into words.

Learn how to pronunce all 44 phonics sounds or phonemes used in the English language. Click on the video below.

Link Sounds to Letters

Children are taught in school to quickly see a link between the phoneme (sounds) and a written representation of that sound (grapheme).

At the bottom of the page there are sound mats and phoneme flash cards for you to use.

These games are great for just practising letter names and sounds. Click on the pictures below to play these games.

Saying the sounds and then merging them together is known as blending. Blending is a skill needed for reading. Watch the video below to learn how to sound out words and blend.

Your child can practise blending by reading their reading book or a book from one of our e-libraries. Click on the pictures below for blending games.

Segementing is the process of splitting words up into their phonemes. Segmenting is the skill needed for spelling and writing.

These games will help your child with segmenting

In the downloads at the bottom of the page, you will find a 'Phonics Glossary', this explains all the technical vocabulary used in phonics lessons such as digraphs, graphemes etc.
