2018 - 2019

Mrs Ghose came to visit Bishop Lonsdale again in October 2018.  We decided this year our joint project would be based around festivals and Harvest. This project was completed by the whole school as part of our Harvest celebration and Diversity Week.

Mrs Ghose visited every classroom and worked with all the children.  She talked about Harvest in Kolkata and the children created Indian inspired paper plate wall art.

We presented Mrs Ghose with a picture of our school and a cross.

In Year 3 we completed a project about India where we looked at festivals, traditional Indian tales ‘The Monkey and the Crocodile’ and ‘The Fable of the Banyan Tree’ which is a special tree in India.

In January 2019 Mrs Sanders (Our Chair of Governors) visited Kolkata and Union Chapel School.

Mrs Sanders wrote an article for our school newsletter.

                                                       A Visit to Class 3

By Mrs Sanders, Chair of Governors

On Friday March 1st I was invited to talk to Mrs Bladon’s class about my recent visit to Kolkata (Calcutta) in India. I went to India with a group of 27 people, mainly teachers but also some students from Derby University. This year the visit was open to parents, governors and teachers so I opted to go as a governor.

The children in Year 3 had prepared many questions for me. They wanted to know the distance between Derby and Kolkata (4977 miles) and they asked me about the food that I had eaten. It was delicious! I showed them some photos of Union Chapel School, the school that we are linked with and the children immediately recognised Mrs Angela Ghose, the Headteacher of Union Chapel School because she came to visit our school before Christmas.

I was fortunate to be able to help with two training days for teachers and visit schools. Mrs Ghose wishes to thank all of us at Bishop Lonsdale for our support. She is currently planning to look at the story of Noah and she wants to teach her children the song ‘Who built the Ark’.

This is a photo of me with Mrs Ghose and some of the street children that Mrs Ghose and Union Chapel school help. She provides them with a drink and a snack and then teaches them some English.

Thank you Year 3 for all your interesting questions!
